The Discrimination Model: Supervision Precision at Full Depth
For LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, LEPs, and pre-licensed associates
Most clinical supervisors know Bernard's Discrimination Model only as a diagram. This 3-hour course rebuilds the nine-cell matrix as a real-time decision instrument, training the full craft inside the teacher, counselor, and consultant roles and the transitions between them.

Course Overview
Bernard's Discrimination Model is the most widely taught supervision model in the world, yet most supervisors have only ever encountered it as a diagram rather than a working tool. This course converts the nine-cell matrix — teacher, counselor, and consultant roles crossed with intervention, conceptualization, and personalization foci — into a real-time decision instrument that California-licensed clinical supervisors and pre-licensed associates preparing for supervisory roles can use in every supervision hour.
What this course covers:
- The model at full resolution: the three foci and three roles at working depth, and the "nine sentences" demonstration
- Reading supervisee need through four channels: request, performance gap, process, and developmental level
- The teacher role's five methods — instruction, modeling, observation, rehearsal, anchored feedback — and its three containment guards
- The counselor role's five-move exploration sequence, with the supervision/therapy boundary held via three markers and a rehearsed four-sentence referral
- The consultant role's four disciplines, the abdication hazard, and bounded-autonomy dosing at Level 1
- Transition craft: marked shifts, return paths, and the audible read, shown in a complete four-cell hour
- The foci at depth: six bands of intervention observation and five components of formulation
- Applying the matrix to group and triadic supervision formats
- Two extended practice cases and the six-beat decision discipline
- Evaluation, ethics, documentation, and the supervisor's own development audits
Participants leave with transition fluency across the matrix and a set of self-auditing practices that keep their supervisory defaults honest.
- The matrix in the opening hours: the assessment month, level-by-domain profiling, contracting the model, and profile-driven goals
- The matrix in the working world: the agency triangle, telehealth compensations, and supervision across difference
- Evaluation, remediation, and gatekeeping with the model's precision: domain ratings, anchors, remediation as structured teaching, documentation, and the California frame

Educational Goals
- Convert the Discrimination Model from a descriptive diagram into a real-time supervisory decision instrument.
- Train the full craft inside each role — teaching methods, exploration protocols, consultation disciplines — with their boundaries and guards.
- Build transition fluency: deliberate, marked movement among cells within a single supervision hour.
- Install the self-auditing practices (home cells, role distribution, empty cells) that keep supervisory defaults honest.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the three roles and three foci at working depth and assess supervisee need through the four channels.
- Apply the teacher role’s five methods — instruction, modeling, observation, rehearsal, anchored feedback — with its three containment guards.
- Conduct the five-move exploration sequence within the counselor role, maintaining the supervision/therapy boundary via its three markers.
- Apply the consultant role’s four disciplines while avoiding abdication, and dose bounded autonomy at Level 1.Execute marked transitions among cells, including return paths and the audible read.
- Assess intervention skills by band and formulation by component, and run the six-beat decision discipline across individual, group, and triadic formats.
- Open a supervision deliberately: build a level-by-domain profile from calibrated self-report, baseline tape, and a work-sample formulation; contract the matrix; and set profile-driven goals with quarterly reviews.
- Run the matrix in agencies, at distance, and across difference — and evaluate, remediate, document, and gatekeep with domain ratings, anchors, and due process.
