Psychodynamic Supervision: The Relationship as the Instrument — Alliance, Parallel Process & Countertransference at Full Depth

For LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, LEPs, and pre-licensed associates

Supervision was born psychodynamic, and this 3-hour course teaches the tradition's core tools as working method for supervisors of any orientation: the supervisory alliance, the disclosure economy, parallel process, and countertransference as data.

Course Overview

The century-old psychodynamic supervision tradition produced the concepts every modern clinical supervisor uses, knowingly or not: the supervisory alliance, parallel process, countertransference as data, and rupture-and-repair. This course teaches that tradition as deliberate working method — usable by supervisors of any theoretical orientation — for California-licensed clinical supervisors and pre-licensed associates preparing for supervisory roles.

What this course covers:
  • The supervisory alliance at full resolution: transferential bond, negotiated goals, contracted tasks, and the scheduled alliance audit
  • The disclosure economy: the five costs supervisees weigh before speaking, shame vs. guilt, six defenses, and six cost-lowering practices
  • Parallel process at full resolution: the three-gear mechanism, the downward direction, and the five-step protocol with its four-hypothesis differential
  • Countertransference supervision: the evoked/imported taxonomy, a six-step working protocol, and the supervisor's own countertransference as a "second instrument"
  • The relationship under load: withdrawal and confrontation ruptures and the four-movement repair
  • Power and evaluation held dynamically, and supervision endings worked as the tradition's final teaching
  • Two extended practice cases integrating the tradition with developmental, matrix, and structured supervision approaches
  • Ethics, documentation, and the practitioner's own path — including personal therapy and supervision-of-supervision
  • The opening hours: the supervision contract as the first interpretation, first-hour choreography, baselines, transfers and fit
  • The wider frame: group supervision economics and roles, the agency triangle, supervision across difference, and telehealth compensations
  • Evaluation and gatekeeping: no-surprises evaluation, dignified remediation, documentation and the California frame, and the gate operated with consultation

Participants leave with concrete alliance-building, disclosure, and rupture-repair language they can use in their very next supervision hour.

Educational Goals

  • Establish the supervisory relationship as a deliberate instrument: alliance built, audited, and repaired on purpose.
  • Train the disclosure economics that determine what supervision actually gets to work with.
  • Teach parallel process and countertransference supervision at full protocol depth, with honest differentials and firm boundaries.
  • Install the supervisor’s self-calibration practices: the second instrument, supervision-of-supervision, and the practitioner’s own work.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Build and audit the supervisory alliance across bond, goals, and tasks, including scheduled instrument-check conversations.
  • Analyze supervisee nondisclosure through the five-cost ledger and apply the six cost-lowering practices.
  • Apply the five-step parallel-process protocol, including the four-hypothesis differential and specificity test.
  • Conduct countertransference supervision using the evoked/imported taxonomy and six-step protocol, maintaining the therapy boundary.
  • Detect withdrawal and confrontation ruptures and implement the four-movement repair, including surviving accurate criticism non-defensively.
  • Work supervision endings developmentally and maintain supervisor self-calibration through supervision-of-supervision.
  • Contract and open a supervision deliberately — logistics, tape norm, demystified evaluation, the relationship clause, and limits — including group, agency, telehealth, and cross-difference frames.
  • Evaluate, remediate, document, and gatekeep psychodynamically: no-surprises evaluation, dignified remediation plans, audit-ready documentation, and the gate operated with consultation.
